Raynham, MA – July 16, 2020: Parris Construction Management has been awarded the construction management contract from Spaulding Hospital to create a new City of Cambridge Shelter for the Homeless in a portion of the East Building of Spaulding Hospital Cambridge that has been vacant for several years.

Demand for the project stems from Spaulding’s interest and commitment to helping with a growing concern from Cambridge City Council officials regarding caring for the homeless in general, the lack of places where homeless people can isolate themselves if they fall ill with Covid-19, and those who are well not having spaces to congregate while staying a safe distance apart.

The initial phase of the shelter project will include the creation of a new dedicated entrance, check-in area, small clinic and rooms and ancillary spaces to accommodate 60 guests – with 31 guests residing on the first floor and 29 guests residing on the second floor. The project also includes a new fire sprinkler system, fire alarm upgrades multiple showers and lavatories, laundry facilities, security systems, mechanical and electrical upgrades and the rehabilitation of an out-of-use elevator. A future phase of the project may also include a third-floor renovation to accommodate additional guests. The project is slated to begin as soon as possible once permits and construction documents are finalized.
